Ely, Nevada January 1st 2008
A new beginning! A new year! A lonely and desolate place here in Nevada; a perfect place to begin a spiritual enterprise- or so I thought! How many of us have a dream or had a dream and yet ended up in desolation? Perhaps you found a safe place in which to hide from the sins of the past. A place where people hope for the best, but the best they can hope for isn’t to be found here in Ely. Yet, I hanker for insight. Intuition tells me this place is for those who are tired of trying. Many great, inspiring people live here, but their true greatness was left elsewhere. It is as if they yearned for a trip to nowhere and found it almost unexpectedly, right here in Ely. Even the ducks in the town pond never venture out. Mountains cascade in parallel lines on each side of town as far as the eye can see. Many miles lie beyond here and anywhere else! A road in; a road out. Not many animals or birds will you see. They also lay in the past- perched above ceiling pipes on bar-room walls or stuffed and encased in glass. Yet, I have an uncanny feeling the energy and spirit of this land lies within the confines of the Shoshone Indian reservation just outside of town. It is defined by several blocks of double-wide trailers, which implies to me, that at any given time the whole community could pack up and roll on down the highway.
Ar 6540 feet above sea level, I am closer to the Universe than I’ve been before. I’m high!!! I was asked if I would recommend this job and place to my best friend and I replied,” No”. I would not due to the futility of life here. You must learn to see, feel and hear your purpose here. Time passes by very slowly and sometimes that defies other places where you never seem to have enough time. You could actually get ahead of yourself here!
Despite the lonesome finality of this small town, I have touched lives and sown seeds. Thus I know my purpose is to do just that. My friends here will cry when I go and welcome me back. I too, know them in a deeper sense; we are one.
